Review: ActiDerm "UltraDerm" Cream*

Friday, 24 April 2015

Hi everyone! Today I've got a little skincare review for you! This is the ActiDerm "UltraDerm" moisturiser, which I was lucky enough to be sent a sample of to test out, and I want to say a big thanks to the lovely folks at ActiDerm for that. It's always nice when a brand gets in touch in a really friendly and approachable way, so huge thumbs up for that!

What They Say?

"UltraDerm is formulated to protect existing stem cells and encourage multiplication and self-renewal. Combining the near impossible of a light, easily absorbed texture with incredibly luxurious richness. The high-performance formula of UltraDerm takes anti- ageing skincare to another dimension, combining the latest in plant stem-cell technology, antioxidants, peptides which support each other in revealing a healthy youthful glow.

This highly advanced proprietary Neuropeptide treatment activates surface renewal of the dermis to reveal visibly younger looking skin. It addresses loss of elasticity while reenergising and hydrating skin. It diminishes the appearance of deep lines and helps to reduce wrinkles and correct the signs of photo damage.

UltraDerm Cream is formulated with a combination of the most powerful anti-ageing ingredients that nourish repair and lift the appearance of skin, while delivering superior antioxidant protection."

What I say!

Firstly, I was really impressed with the packaging of this product - it's simple but still looks pretty displayed on your shelf. It's the simple things, I know.

In terms of the product itself, I've been impressed. This moisturiser feels lovely - it has a really interesting texture, and I totally agree with their claim that it is rich, yet easily absorbed. I have the awkward situation of having skin that is crying out for a heavy duty moisturiser to inject some life back into it, but I really don't like having anything too heavy or tacky feeling on my skin. You know those moments when you've applied your moisturiser and five minutes later your hair is still getting stuck to your face because it still feels tacky? I was delighted to find I had no such problem with this moisturiser! That was probably my favourite thing about it. It feels like your skin is getting a proper drink, without the feel of a super heavy moisturiser.

In terms of the anti ageing properties and wrinkle reduction claims of this moisturiser, I don't know that I can be the best judge - at 25, I feel like I'm just starting to have to think about these things, so it isn't something my skin has been in desperate need of so far! However, I definitely have felt that my skin looks glowy after using this product, which, considering how temperamental my skin has been of late, I would definitely say is a positive sign.

The other great thing about it is that you really don't need to use a lot of product in one go. A small amount goes a long way, and thanks to the texture, it glides on really smoothly, so you don't feel like you need to keep going back for more! The 50ml jar comes in at £29.99, which is actually pretty good for the amount of product you're getting, and the amount you'll use daily! I popped on to the Space NK website there for a wee look, and when you consider that some of the moisturisers they stock are upwards of £200 and even £300, £29.99 is a good deal!

Keep your eyes peeled, because I also have an ActiDerm eyeshadow, which I want to show you over on my YouTube channel rather than on here - it'll let you see the product in action! I'm planning to use it in a Get Ready With Me at some point over the next few weeks, so be sure to subscribe to my channel to watch out for that!

You can check out ActiDerm's entire range of skincare and beauty products over on their website here.

Thanks for reading!

Drugstore Favourites: Top 5 Under £5!

Monday, 16 March 2015

Happy Monday everyone!

Anyone who knows me knows I love a bargain. When it comes to my beauty products, if I can get my hands on something that works amazingly well for a reasonable price, I'll shout about it from the rooftops! So today I decided to dedicate an entire post to doing just that - celebrating five of my favourite high street/drugstore beauty items of late, which all come in under the £5 mark! These five products are permanent fixtures in my makeup drawer, and I hope you like them as much as I do!

Images sourced on Boots.com

Batiste Dry Shampoo - Dark and Deep - £3.99

I love this stuff! As someone who really needs to wash their hair every day but tries not to, dry shampoo is a life saver on those in between days. However, if you have dark hair, I would definitely recommend investing in the colour specific one - I used to use the original white ones and found that although they did a great job on my hair, I sometimes felt I could still see traces of greyish/white powder lingering in my roots! So the dark brown version gives my hair a much needed boost, but without leaving any trace of the product.

Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer - £4.19

This post really wouldn't be complete without the holy grail drugstore concealer so many of us have loved for years now, would it?! I started using this product way back when Fleur de Force first mentioned it on her channel, and I've never looked back. It has amazing coverage, the lightest shade is actually light enough for my pasty Scottish skin and at just £4.19, it doesn't break the bank. I've tried other concealers, and will keep on testing out new things, but I don't think there will ever be a time this isn't in my makeup bag!

Bourjois Magic "1 Seconde" Nail Polish Remover Pot - £4.99

Before I bought the Bourjois Magic Nail Polish remover for the first time I was seriously lazy when it came to my nails. I painted them intermittently because honestly, taking it off to repaint them always seemed like a chore. Once this found its way onto my shelf, that totally changed! My nails are now rarely unpainted, because using this is so quick and easy. I made a video reviewing this here (way back before I got my proper camera!) if you fancy checking that out!

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water - £4.99

Cleansing waters are a bit hit or miss for people, but I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed using this one. It took off every bit of my makeup, including my relatively heavy eye-makeup, really quickly and easily, and didn't irritate my skin at all. I see that they have now added "Pure" and "Sensitive" versions to the collection, so if you're in the market for a new cleanser and don't have the budget for one of the higher end micellar water products, give this one a go!

Barry M Gelly High Shine Nail Paints - £3.99

I have a lot of love for Barry M in general - I find that the quality of their products for the price is amazing. The ever expanding colour range, with cute new collections released what feels like every other month, makes the brand a definite drug store favourite. However, the Gelly High Shine range is particularly impressive. These nail polishes leave you with beautiful, shiny nails, and for the darker colours in particular, the colour is opaque after just one coat. I really love the shades Sugar Apple (pictured above) and Greenberry, but the entire collection is just beautiful - Lychee is next on my "to buy" list!

So that's it for my pick of drugstore beauty bargains! What are some of your favourite budget makeup and beauty products?

Eyeliner 101 - Tips from an Eyeliner Enthusiast

Friday, 30 January 2015

Over the past year or so I got over my fear of selfies, and started posting more photos of my face on to my instagram. It occurred to me recently that while I don't get hundreds of comments, any comments I do get on said selfies are usually in relation to my eyeliner!

As a self-confessed eyeliner addict, who no longer looks like herself without a cat eye style wing above her lashes, it's always really lovely to get compliments on how I apply it. So even though I wouldn't consider myself an expert, I thought I'd do a little eyeliner tips post, for any of you who can rock a bold lip (which will never work for me) but get a bit overwhelmed when it comes to your winged eyeliner!

1. Be confident! I think one of the biggest things that causes people to run into trouble with eyeliner is being too cautious. If you're busy trying not to make a mistake, your grip on your brush/pen/whatever you're using probably won't be steady, and you're more likely to end up with the product somewhere you didn't want it to be. So don't be scared of it! It isn't a tattoo, you won't be stuck with it forever! Literally the worst that can happen is you mess up and have to start again, and if that means redoing your eyeshadow, so be it!

2. Speaking of redoing things, if you're not feeling confident yet, don't leave the eyeliner till last! I know it's tempting because it's the part you're least sure of, but it can end up costing you precious getting ready time! Put your eye makeup on first, and then if you do make a mistake and have to remove it, you're just removing your eye makeup and not ruining your base! Also, allow yourself a good amount of time to do your makeup so you're not harassed because you're running late; that can only lead to smudging!

3. Find the right product for you! Just because someone else creates a beautiful line with a gel, does not mean that's the medium for you! I'll use a gel if it's the only thing I have to hand, but I'm a liquid eyeliner girl through and through (I'd be lost without my L'Oreal Superliners!). There are plenty of options, from liquid with a brush or a liquid pen, to a gel, a kohl pencil, or even an eyeshadow used on an angled brush. Play around with different options till you find the one you're most comfortable with.

4. Experiment with different tools! Again, there are different options, so if you've tried a gel liner with a narrow eyeliner brush and it hasn't worked, try using an angled brush. These tools can make all the difference. In addition to that, figure out if you're more comfortable applying the product standing up or sitting down - I'm in such a habit of putting my makeup on standing, which means I find it trickier to apply eyeliner if I'm sitting. It sounds bizarre, but these little things really can make a big difference!

5. Plot out where you're going with it first! The more often you apply it, the more used you'll become to the direction you're taking it, but it never hurts to put a few dots in place as a guide for drawing in your lines! Pop a dot on the outer corner and a couple more leading to where you want the wing to end. Then it's just a case of joining the dots and then filling in the rest of the wing! It's probably not a bad idea to start small, too. Eventually, you will be confident enough channel your inner Amy Winehouse, but starting small makes the whole process a lot less intimidating!

6. Practice practice practice! Honestly, the old saying practice makes perfect definitely applies here. If you have half an hour at home with nothing to do, go and put some eyeliner on. It's like learning any new skill - the more often you do it, the more confident you get.

7. Don't worry if it doesn't turn out the same shape every time - that's part of what makes eyeliner so much fun! I love playing around with different shapes, narrow lines, thick lines, and crazy wings, but partly that's because despite the fact I wear it every single day of my life, I very rarely get it to look exactly the same twice. So don't be annoyed if it doesn't end up at quite the same angle every time. Embrace it!

There you have it - my tips for applying your eyeliner! I hope that was interesting, and helpful to any eyeliner newbies, and thank you so much for reading :)

Have a lovely weekend!

Writing this post reminded me of seeing this on Pinterest! You wouldn't believe the number of times this still happens to me, despite doing it every day!

Post-Christmas Beauty Gift Guide!

Tuesday, 23 December 2014

Hello all! Hope you're all having a lovely time in the lead up to Christmas - I cannot believe tomorrow is Christmas Eve!! This year I didn't do any sort of gift guide in time for Christmas itself, but what I thought might be fun would be to do a guide for things to look out for after Christmas! Let's face it - most of us end up doing a little bit of shopping in the sales when Christmas is over, and if you're as beauty daft as I am, you usually end up with a much wanted gift card for one of your favourite beauty outlets. So I thought I'd put together a little wishlist of sorts, of beauty bits and pieces I have added to my ''future purchases'' list, and I'd love to know what's on yours!

I also wanted to let y'all know - I have an exciting piece of beauty related news! House of Fraser got in touch to let me know that they're running a "12 Days of Christmas" offers event, starting tomorrow! It'll be running from Christmas Eve to 4th January, with some big beauty names being reduced each day. Keep your eyes peeled on their Twitter and Facebook accounts (and the House of Fraser website of course!) for more details :) A few of the bits and pieces on my current wishlist are available at HoF so I, for one, will be keeping a close eye on the 12 Days of Christmas deals!

1. Soap and Glory "The Perfect 10" Palette - Boots - £16.00

You know me - I'm a self-confessed eye makeup addict, and there's nothing I like more than a good eye-shadow palette. This one grabbed my attention in Boots yesterday, and I can't help but think it would make a smashing addition to my collection. Had to resist temptation when out shopping for my family and friends, but that won't be an issue after Thursday!

2. Lancôme Mascara Gift Set* - House of Fraser - £22.50

Isn't this a gorgeous gift set?! I'm a recent Lancôme mascara convert. You know how I only ever buy drug store mascaras? That has now changed thanks to trying the Hypnose mascara for the first time a few months ago! House of Fraser have these great gift sets which include one of the Hypnose range mascaras, a mini black kohl liner and a 30ml bottle of their Bi-Facil, all for just £22.50!

3. YSL Rouge Volupte Shine Lipstick in Shade 13 - House of Fraser - £25.00

I just can't deal with how gorgeous this colour is. I still don't own any of the Rouge Volupte lipsticks, but I just think they are stunning, and I hear consistently good things about them. So this little gem has most certainly caught my eye.

4. Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector - Space NK - £33.00

This is something I've wanted for ages and ages - I've seen many a YouTuber use this gorgeous skin perfector in tutorials and I've always mentally added it to my basket, I'm just yet to actually take it to the checkout. I think I've always just a little bit worried that it's a overrated? If you've tried it and have thoughts on this, let me know in the comments below!

5. Barry M Aquarium Nail Paint in Treasure Chest - Superdrug - £3.99

Isn't this stunning!! I mean, seriously, I love the Barry M nail paints as it is, but this gold glitter is just beautiful. I've already got one of the polishes from the Aquarium collection and it is gorgeous, I always get compliments on it, to this is definitely one I'll be hard pushed to walk away from (when it's just £3.99!).

6. MAC Teknakohl Liner in Risqué - House of Fraser - £14.00

Would you just look at that colour? I love experimenting with different eyeliner looks and honestly, I think this just looks so pretty.

7. Estée Lauder Pure Colour High Shine Gloss Collection - House of Fraser - £34.00

Gorgeous, glittery, shiny lipglosses - have you ever seen such a lovely gift set when it comes to lip products?! These are just stunning. Bravo Estee Lauder. Bravo.

So that's it for my little "treat yourself after Christmas" beauty guide! I'd love to know what's on yours!

Thanks for reading, and I hope you have an absolutely fantastic Christmas.

On Makeup

Monday, 21 July 2014

Much like my On Feminism post, this is something I've actually wanted to write for a while, but have put off because I've never quite managed to get the wording right. A little disclaimer before we get started - this is an extremely subjective post, all coming from my own personal experience!

I was listening to Colbie Caillat's new single "Try" this weekend, and watching the highly praised video. It really is a beautiful song and video, and a lovely idea. But part of it links into something which bothers me, and has done so for a long time. The notion that women could only ever wear make-up to impress other people. Namely, men.

In the age of photoshop and celeb culture, body image issues are all around us. The "perfect" body shape, the "perfect" face. Diets and exercise regimes and juice cleanses, plastic surgery to alter your body to what it "should" look like. Treatments to "fix" your hair. Anti-aging products, fake tans and hair removal treatments, diet pills and lip-plumping glosses.

The world is a hot-bed of insecurity and for women, it is particularly difficult. From such an early age you are fed ideas of beauty, and what constitutes beautiful - what size and what shape. Taught to cover up blemishes and create an image of perfection. Something that men are rarely exposed to because make-up is "girly", so men couldn't possibly want to wear it - a subject I don't feel I have the authority to write on what with not being a man myself, but something I think definitely deserves more of a discussion.

As someone with pretty strong feminist views, it goes without saying that this is something that I hate, and wish we could find a way to change. I'm excited to say that I genuinely feel like the body confidence movement has taken a small but positive step forward this year (check out the Body Confidence Revolution - led by Leyah Shanks - on twitter). However, lately there has been an influx of conversations around "taking your make-up off". From the make-up-free selfie to raise awareness for breast cancer - which was a wonderful idea in that it did in fact help to raise money - to the song I mentioned at the start of this post. The persistent implication, however, is that wearing make-up is something women only do to impress other people, and attract men. The irony in that is that half the time we hear men saying they prefer the natural look. I'm glad we are talking about this because so many people out there feel completely unnecessary pressure to conform to a certain ideal, with make-up playing a huge part in that. But for me, the way we are going about resolving this issue is problematic. Having someone tell me I shouldn't wear make-up, even with the best of intentions, annoys me just as much as someone telling me I should. I think whether I do or not should be up to me, and I'd like to think I won't be judged either way.

It's pretty obvious that I love make-up. I took a make-up artistry course after uni, and have obsessed over beauty blogs and YouTube channels for over five years now. All my life, the idea of make-up has excited me, and luckily I was born in that blissful period before the internet, when kids were allowed to be kids and weren't subjected to a barrage of body image messages from pre-school age. Although I didn't properly start wearing it until my mid-teens, as a tiny child I used to "do my mum's make-up" for her. That usually involved putting bright green eye-make-up on her, and drawing flowers and hearts in eyeshadow on her face. But I loved seeing what I could create, even at that age.

Since then, I grew up a bit, and rather than doodling daisys, I started seeing what I could actually do with make-up. The tricks of the trade - contouring my eyes or cheeks, getting that eyeliner flick just right. Finding the perfect lip colour to go with my blusher. To someone with no interest in the creative side of make-up, that just sounds sad, I know that. But when we live in a world where every time you turn on the news you learn about another horrific atrocity somewhere in the world, whether it's a sexual assault in Glasgow, or the devastation in Gaza, the world is a bit of a dark place these days. So if experimenting with make-up helps me have some fun and feel positive, you bet I'm going to do it.

I can only speak for myself, because make-up is an extremely personal thing. I absolutely hate the thought of young girls - in fact, women of any age - feeling that they aren't beautiful without make-up, or that they have to wear it to be accepted. You should never wear anything, be it clothes or make-up, that you aren't comfortable with. When I get up in the morning and go through my make-up routine, the only person I'm doing it for is myself. The kick I get out of my eyeliner actually perfectly matching on both eyes. The lift it gives me, taking me from the sleepy, not-at-all-a-morning-person, to someone ready to face the day. It's something I love to do. Does it boost my confidence? Absolutely. I have far from perfect skin, and the transformation I feel when going from bare-faced to "made-up" for lack of a better term, is phenomenal. But it's phenomenal for me, and me alone. It's a confidence booster, a mood lifter, a part of my routine which makes me feel good. It makes me feel creative - deciding what colour palette to work from, and changing up my lip colour from nude to bold from one day to the next. When it comes right down to it, make-up is fun, and that's why I love it.

Do I go out of the house make-up free? Honestly? Hardly ever. But I don't think that is a reflection of my self-esteem. If I hated every minute of putting make-up on, if I dreaded taking that foundation out of the drawer and taking the fifteen minutes out of my day to do my make-up, but did it anyway, then I would start to worry. Then, I might feel like I was doing it for someone else's benefit. Our society and "make-up free celeb" paparazzi shots, combined with our insecurities can trick us into thinking the moment we step outside make-up-less, everyone will notice us. But when was the last time you walked down the street, or sat on the train, and pointed out every make-up free woman you saw to your friends? When was the last time you even actually noticed a make-up free woman? If you feel like putting makeup on is a chore, and you simply cannot wait for lazy days in the house when you can go makeup free, if make-up doesn't lift your mood and bring you joy, you'll eventually find the confidence to stop wearing it every day. Because no-one should waste precious moments of their day doing something they don't have to because they're afraid they'll be judged if they don't.

But I don't feel that way. I know I don't have to wear make-up, I just want to. My eyeliner is as much a part of my identity as a tattoo, or a piercing on someone else. Every day, whether I'm going to uni, going on a night out, or spending the day at home, putting my make-up on gives me a buzz, the way going for a run is the highlight of a more athletic person's morning. I shouldn't have to deprive myself of that buzz to prove to anyone that I am a confident woman.

Being confident is about being completely comfortable with yourself, knowing what you love and believe in, and sticking to that no matter what. For me, the most important thing is that people feel good about themselves, whether that's make-up free, with a hint of mascara and lipstick, or a full face of make-up. What matters is that people know they have a choice. As long as we keep this conversation going, acknowledging the power the media has to warp our perceptions of beauty and force feed us images of airbrushed celebrities, we're on the right track. We just need to talk to kids from a young age about feeling body positive, and then the rest (what clothes they wear and whether or not they choose to wear makeup) can be well and truly left up to them.

So, although I love you Colbie, I'm quite happy to keep my make-up on for now. Because it doesn't feel like trying hard. It feels like being myself.

Event: Boots, Fort Kinnaird, Edinburgh

Sunday, 18 May 2014

This week Kirsty, Jade and I popped along to an event at the Boots store at Fort Kinnaird in Edinburgh. As a Glasgow gal this was a store I had never visited before, and I was excited to finally be heading along to a blogging event after two months of having to say no to the odd invite that came my way! It was smashing to catch up with the girls, who I hadn't seen in weeks, and who doesn't love a wee evening of beauty-centric chat?!

We were greeted at the door by the lovely Carolyn, who introduced us to some of the staff from their wide range of beauty counters. With everything from Ojon and Bumble and Bumble hair care (who treated us to an amazing head massage courtesy of Sarah!) to Bare Minerals and everything in between, we spent a really nice couple of hours perusing the counters and chatting with the friendly staff. Kirsty even had her makeup done at the Bare Minerals counter, and we talked new product launches and must have makeup items at Benefit.

All in all it was a really lovely evening, and if you live in the Edinburgh area and are looking to pick up some new makeup I would definitely recommend popping in to this branch of Boots - it's a lovely, spacious store with a wide range of high end counters, in addition to all of the usual brands Boots carries (Revlon, 17, Bourjois etc). The staff aim to cater their service to each individual customer's needs, whether you're in a mad rush to grab something and go, or if you've got some time to spare and fancy a chat.

I took lots of photos on the night and they're all so colourful I decided to include most of them. At the bottom, however, is a sneak peek in the AMAZING goodie bag we left with that night. The girls and I felt so spoilt, so thank you so much to everyone at Boots for that!

Fly Away with Me - Wishlist

Tuesday, 28 January 2014

There's nothing new or unusual about a trend for bird printed fashion or accessories - no matter what the season, birds and owls (rereading this later and laughing at myself for classing owls as a separate category) seem to be a popular choice! However, I couldn't help but notice a few bits and pieces recently that I really liked (particularly the chiffon dress from H&M), and thought I'd make a wee wishlist out of them!

1. Chiffon Swallow Print Dress - H&M - £14.99

2. Pale Pink Lace Trim Parrot Print Cami - New Look - £12.99

Get Ready With Me!

Wednesday, 25 September 2013

Hey guys! Major apologies for this cop out of a post, I've had a crazy busy week being back at uni and settling in (which I'm going to do a post on this weekend!) and have been along to a couple of lovely blogger events (which there will also be posts on!) and I've just not had time to write up a post... so instead, if you haven't subscribed to my YouTube channel, here's a wee link to my newest video - it's a get ready with me one, which I really enjoyed filming, so expect to see more of these in future!

I really hope you're all well, and can't quite get my head around the fact there are almost 200 of you following this blog now! I appreciate every single one of you, so leave me a wee comment to say hi if you haven't before - I get such a kick out of getting comments from you lovely readers (it's actually quite sad how excited I get!!)... x

First Impressions | ''Granny Sally's Soap Kitchen'' Range

Friday, 20 September 2013

Hi guys! Hope you are all well :)

I was really excited to be invited along to the Pout event in Edinburgh tomorrow - can't resist a girly day out with some of my favourite bloggers! When I was contacted ahead of the event to see if I would be interested in sampling a couple of products from one of the lovely brands which will be appearing at Pout, I jumped at the chance!

Since I only received the products this week this will be more of a first impressions post than a full on review, but you can expect to see that in a couple of weeks. But I have to say, my first impression of the Granny Sally's Soap Kitchen range is definitely a positive one. It is a Edinburgh based, family run business selling a lovely range of handmade soaps, body scrubs and body butters, candles and skincare, in a variety of scents. I was pleased as punch to receive four sample products from the Next to Godliness Tea Tree Range, and a jar of their Vanilla Rice Pudding Scrub.

The scent of these products is AMAZING. I'm a sucker for anything vanilla, but I literally want to eat the Vanilla Rice Pudding scrub! The tea tree cleanser, toner and moisturiser smell incredibly fresh and clean, and the brand uses only natural ingredients - always a huge plus:

''We use only the best natural ingredients with either vegetable or fruit bases - this way we can keep natures cute and fluffy types happy too!

You can even use it on sensitive skin!''

I also love the packaging - the little jars are so cute! I like that the design is nice and simple, inkeeping with their natural products.

So that's it for my first impressions of these lovely products - I always like discovering new Scottish brands and can't wait to see more of their lovely range at the Pout event! I just wanted to draw your attention to the event, incase you hadn't heard about it! Pout will be held at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh tomorrow and Sunday morning (21st and 22nd September 2013) and as far as I'm aware you can still buy tickets online, or on the door! Will I be seeing some of your faces there?! :)

Thanks for reading, and thanks so much to Granny Sally's Soap Kitchen for sending me these lovely samples - I feel very lucky on the odd occasion I am given the chance to try something out and let you all know what I think of it :)

Appointedd Launch - Edinburgh, August 2013

Saturday, 31 August 2013

On Monday 12th of August I was lucky enough to attend the launch of Appointedd, a new and exciting business venture in the hair and beauty industry. The launch was a breakfast at the lovely Hotel Missoni in Edinburgh, with a mix of bloggers and industry professionals attending and plenty tea, coffee and pastries to keep us going!

The concept of Appointedd is pretty straightforward - it's a hair and beauty treatment booking site which salons can list their business on, and clients (old and new) can book an appointment for whatever treatment they desire with just the click of a button. The company is led by Leah Hutcheon, a former magazine editor who turned losing her job into an opportunity to launch her own business when she approached Entrepreneurial Spark (the Scottish business start up accelarator) with her idea. Two years later, Appointedd is here, and Leah has worked incredibly hard to get her business off the ground.

The event itself was an interesting format. After meeting my lovely blogging pals Iona and Jade for a quick trip to Cafe Nero, we headed off to Hotel Missoni where we met up with Gillian, Lynne and Laura for half an hour of chatting with Leah, enjoying a cup of tea and having a little nosey at the website (which I've included a little screenshot of at the start of this post!). The turn out was excellent, with us bloggers outnumbered by lots of industry professionals, which was great to see - it shows what potential a business like this really has. We were then led into another room where we were greeted with lots of lovely pastries, more tea and coffee and a more professional set up, projector and all. Leah welcomed us to the event and gave us a bit of insight into the background of the business, her own professional background and shared some of her hopes for the future of Appointedd. This was followed by a really interesting presentation by James from the company Social For Salons (via Skype from China - the wonders of technology!). Hearing some of the stats on how social media should be being embraced by the hair and beauty industry was a highlight of the event.

These presentations were followed by a panel discussions, with five industry professionals answering questions posed by Leah, and by the audience. This was a good opportunity for people who are currently working in the hair and beauty industry to give us their thoughts on the site, and on the industry itself. Everyone seemed really positive and encouraging, which was brilliant to see for Leah and the team.

I had a great morning at the Appointedd launch, and would definitely recommend checking out the website (which I've linked below!)! It's so useful to have lots of salon options all in the one place, especially if you are new to the area and feeling a bit lost in terms of finding a good new salon! Thanks so much to Leah and everyone at Appointedd and Social for Salons, we had a great time and wish you all the best with the future of the business!

Pretty in Pink

Illamasqua Powder Blush in Nymph - Illamasqua

Barry M Lip Liner in 12 - Superdrug

L'Oreal Paris Colour Appeal Chrome in Golden Rose - Superdrug

Revlon Lip Butter in Sorbet - Boots

Essie Nail Polish in Boom Boom Room - Essie

MAC Cremesheen Glass in Right Image - MAC

By Terry Rose de Rose Liquid Blush in Fresh Rose - Space NK

The past few days I've been favouring a very pink makeup look. Usually, with my skin tone, I'm more drawn to peachy shades, but after buying myself a bold raspberry shade of lipstick from the Bourjois Rouge Shine Edition Collection (it's number 22 and it's gorgeous!!), I've been complementing the pink lip with pink cheeks care of my ELF Pink Passion Blusher and some pinky nude eyeshadows (mainly Sin and Toasted from the Naked Palette!). This has led to me feeling the urge to buy lots of pretty pink things. I did a colour coded wish list a couple of months ago and enjoyed it, so thought I'd do another one but just stick to beauty products this time (the last one included fashion too!). If you liked this idea, let me know and I'll maybe make it a little series - although when we're getting to blues and greens that might be a little trickier!

Do you own any of the products on this wish list? I've got several of the Revlon Lip Butters and I love them - Sorbet may well be next on my list!

Thanks for reading, hope you are all well!

Karla Powell at The Academy of Makeup!

Sunday, 21 July 2013

Over the past year I've become a huge fan of Karla Powell - if you have an interest in makeup, an addiction to twitter and live in the UK you'd have to have been living under a rock the past few months to have missed the amazing work she has been doing - her pop art makeup look has proved to be particularly popular: check it out in the YouTube video at the end of this post!!

With over 12,000 followers on twitter and over 15,000 on instagram, Karla is fast becoming one the most talked about MUAs in the country. Just a few months ago, before I headed off to Australia on my travels, I spoke to Karla via email about a little interview for the Academy of Makeup, and she sent me some lovely words which I included in a post which I'll link here. Now, little over six months later, Sara Hill, director of the Academy, texted me to let me know that Karla will be coming to the Academy on the 17th August!! She will be running a masterclass sharing her tips and tricks with us which is an amazing opportunity for any of her fans!

As a graduate of the Academy myself, I'll be going along and I can't wait to see Karla in action!! Spaces are very limited though, so if you would like be there to learn from one of the most exciting makeup artists in the country today, book your place now!

From what I can tell, this masterclass will be perfect for makeup enthusiasts and makeup artists alike, so whatever your level of experience, this is an event not to be missed! You can click here to book a place! Unsurprisingly, the spaces are filling up pretty quickly!

*Disclaimer - I'm sure a lot of you know that I used to work for the Academy of Makeup, but I'm now working elsewhere, so this little plug is purely to let you guys know about Karla's visit to Scotland - I think it's going to be a brilliant class, and I'd love to see some of you there! Boring bit over, let's get excited about the makeup!!

Wishlist - Pretty Printed Dresses

Monday, 15 July 2013

Tattoo Floral Teadress - Topshop - £45

Block Print Sleeveless Bodycon - Topshop - £29

Pussycat Neon Pink and Grey Tribal Wrap Dress - New Look - £25 - New Look - £19.99

Parisian Cream Aztec Cut Out Back Skater Dress - New Look - £19.99

Bourjois Rouge Edition Shine Rouge Making Of - Superdrug - £7.99

Revlon Lip Butter in Juicy Papaya - Superdrug - £7.99

Rimmel Apocalips Lip Lacquer in Nova - Superdrug - £5.99

Rimmel Kate Moss Matte Lipstick in Wine - Superdrug - £5.49

A little wish-list of pretty printed dresses and lipsticks, all from the high street! I rarely buy anything from Topshop (the prices just aren't justifiable to me!) but I really liked the print of the little white teadress, and I can't resist a bold bodycon dress! I'm addicted to the Revlon Lip Butters and Juicy Papaya is definitely next on my 'to buy' list from the collection! And although I probably wouldn't wear either the Apocalips in Nova or the Kate Moss wine lipstick (not the right shades for my skin tone!), I reckon they would look quite nice with the dresses I've paired them up with! What do you think? Where is your favourite place to shop on the high street?

REVIEW: Bourjois 1 Seconde Nail Polish

Friday, 12 July 2013

Hello all, hope you've had a lovely week!

I mentioned this nail polish in my latest haul video and people seemed to like the look of it - so I thought I'd dedicate a quick blogpost to it!

It's the Bourjois: 1 Seconde Gel Nail Polish, which, if you're like me, you may initially misinterpret and think it aims to dry in 1 second - click here to see a video with my genuine first reaction to this thought.

In reality, however, what this clever little nail polish does is not dry in one second, but apply in one second. The trick is the nifty lttle fan shaped, slightly wider than normal brush, which allows you to coat the whole nail in one sweep. And it works! The slight issue for me is that my pinky and ring finger nails are quite narrow, and since I am not the world's best nail painter, this can mean there's a little bit to remove once you have painted them! However, if unlike me you have nails of a normal width, this is genius!

I have this lovely polish in two shades - Rose Cupcake, and Turquoise Block... I apologise that the photo of the pink shade is an instagram number but to be honest, I just love this turquoise one too much to take off right now. It. Is. Beautiful.

I also love that this nail polish (a) is really opaque with just one coat (I tend to go for two anyway but in a rush one would do just fine) and (b) it dries really quickly! Okay, so it's not quite one second, but it's not bad. I'll time it next time I use it ;)

The Bourjois: 1 Seconde Gel Nail Polishes are £5.99 each from Boots and Superdrug. Definitely go and check them out - they are fantastic!

My Summer Wishlist - Corals and Pinks from New Look!

Saturday, 15 June 2013

I'm having a little bit of a love affair with anything pink and coral at the moment - my eye is just being completely drawn to these colours this summer! I was in New Look for a browse the other day and lots of pretty things in these hues caught my eye!

Candy Pink Crochet Heart Lightweight Knit Top (£14.99) - Love the shape of this little jumper, since we're not exactly having scorchingly hot weather this summer (or any summer in the UK these days!) this is perfect for a cooler summer day.

Gold Spike Gemstone Necklace (£5.99) - I have a slightly similar bronze toned necklace, with a few chunky spikes on it from New Look, but I really like how simple this one is.

Misumi Pink and Navy Apple Print Dress (£24.99) - How lovely is this?! I've seen a few fruit and veg themed items recently that are really sweet, my friend Cassie has a cute playsuit with a tomato print, which sounds crazy but it's so nice!

4 Pack Pink and Gold Cross Curve Plate Rings (£7.99) - I've bought a few rings recently (some really cute ones from Forever 21) and these are most definitely next on my jewellery wish list!

Tribal Tapestry Midi Skirt (£14.99) - I actually went as far as trying this skirt on and it was lovely, I still might go back and buy it!

Coral and Gold Chain Flip Flops (£15.99) - I love me a pair of flip-flops (we all know I'm not much of a heels girl) and I love the coral colour of this pair.

Coral Speckled Longline Boyfriend Blazer (£24.99)- I need a couple of jackets for work (now that I have a job!!) and this is a nice summery one, which would be so versatile.

What are your must haves this summer? From anywhere, not just New Look - I just picked out a few of the things I saw that I liked the most because I saw so many in there yesterday! :)

#Disclaimer - this post is in no way sponsored by New Look - I was just really impressed by their current collection!

Current Beauty Wishlist

Sunday, 9 June 2013

1. Bourjois Color Boost Lipstick in Peach on the Beach - I have this in Orange Punch and I can't tell you how much I love it! The consistency is amazing, and the colour payoff is so good. (Superdrug, £7.99)

2. L'Oréal Nude Magique BB Blush - I've been lusting after this for weeks, every single time I go into Boots or Superdrug I almost buy it, but I've been holding off because I've bought a few new things recently, and I'm trying to be good! It blends in so nicely though when you swatch it. I guarantee you will see me reviewing this soon! (Superdrug, £7.99)

3. Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation - Everyone is talking about this foundation lately, and I know for a fact it's good, I used it while I was training at the Academy of Makeup, and it's so lovely. I think I might splurge next time I'm buying a foundation and go for this one, the coverage is so good. (House of Fraser, £33.00)

4.Bourjois Bronzing Primer - a drugstore cream bronzer that is under £10 and is getting great reviews... need I say more?! (Boots, £6.99)

5. Korres Lip Butter - I really, really, really want a Korres Lip Butter. I know everyone and their grandmother has one or wants one, but I'm not afraid to jump on the bandwagon. I saw the lovely Gillian from elevatormusik review this recently and it made me want it even more! (feelunique.com, £8)

6. Inglot Colour Play Lipstick Palette - let's just take a moment to appreciate how much fun you could have experimenting with this palette?! Again, I saw a review of this recently, Nikkie from NikkieTutorials talked about it in a recent blogpost and video, and I am so tempted by this. I could have hours of fun playing around with it! (£4.50 per lipstick, will find out the price of the palette and include it asap!)

7. China Glaze Nail Polish in Pink Voltage - I saw Ingrid from missglamorazzi wear this in her recent Get Ready With Me video, and I loved it instantly, such a gorgeous shocking pink colour for the summer! (beautybay.com, £6.95)

Hope you enjoyed that little current makeup must haves post! Let me know what your summer makeup wish list consists of in the comments below :)

Favourites of the Week #7

Thursday, 9 May 2013

It's the return of my weekly favourites!!

While I was travelling I didn't really have time to do these posts, and I've missed them. So, without further ado, here are the things I've been loving this week...

Track of the Week
Can't Hold Us - Savannah Outen and Jake Coco (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Cover)

This week I've been testing how fast I can sing/sort of rap by having this cover of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis on repeat on my iPod. Trust me, there's nothing like the feeling of satisfaction when you realise you've learnt all the words...

Album of the Week
Ellie Goulding - Halcyon

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love Ellie Goulding to pieces and this album is most definitely top of my playlist this week. There are a few standout tracks (Figure 8, My Blood and I Need Your Love being three obvious favourites), but there are a couple that really grow on you the more you listen, which is one of the things I really love about Ellie's music - Don't Say a Word and Hanging On are two examples of this.

TV Show of the Week
Veronica Mars

I never need an excuse to revisit Veronica Mars and something told me (maybe all the Kirsten Bell interviews I've been watching!) this week that I should make the always exciting move of rewatching the Pilot - I'm hooked again already. Honestly, it is one of the best television shows of all time!!! I couldn't be more pleased that a film is finally in the pipeline!

Film of the Week
Silver Linings Playbook

As I mentioned in my What I've Been Watching post the other day, I absolutely adored Silver Linings Playbook and went out and bought the dvd. Never, in recent times, have I parted with £12 for a newly released dvd - I'm more of a 'wait till it's been out a few months and get it cheap on Amazon' kind of gal. But in this case I couldn't resist. I love everything about this film, from the plot to the soundtrack to the brilliant acting from every single member of the cast (with Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence both completely deserving their Oscar nominations). If you haven't seen it, you should! I know this is one I will watch over and over again.

Beauty Product of the Week
Revlon Lip Butter in Wild Watermelon

I treated myself to this when they were on offer for £5.99 in Superdrug and I've fallen completely in love with it! I adore the Revlon Lip Butter's anyway, but this colour is gorgeous. It's much more vibrant than what I usually wear on my lips, but I really like it, and will do a proper review, complete with photos and swatches soon!

Book of the Week
One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern

As you all know, I love Cecelia Ahern and I downloaded her most recent book on my Kindle while I was in Australia. I didn't get a chance to start reading it till I got home though, and I'm about a quarter of the way through it - really enjoying it so far. It's the story of a journalist named Kitty who has found herself in hot water after wrongly accusing a man of a crime he didn't commit, with disastrous results for her personal life and career. Alongside this, her friend, mentor and boss has just passed away, leaving her with a list of names connected to a story she wanted to write before she died. Kitty is left to figure out how these one hundred people are connected and hopefully write the story Constance never had the chance to. It's another interesting concept from Ahern, and I just love her writing style.

YouTuber of the Week
Louise - Sprinkle of Glitter

We all know I love Louise, but this week she uploaded an interesting video addressing the tricky subject of self-harm and I think she handled it brilliantly. It must be difficult for YouTubers with a lot of subscribers when people ask them to make videos on this sort of serious topic. But it was a well balanced, properly researched video and didn't go on for too long - it said exactly what it needed to say. Apparently it was mentioned on the BBC and Sky News too!

Blog of the Week (new category!)
Roaring Twenties

You know when someone has a distinctive style that you just instantly love? For me I found that when I first started reading the lovely Margaret's blog a few months back after meeting her at a blogger event in Edinburgh. I love the tone of her posts, the film quotes and the fact that she rarely writes a post that doesn't have me laughing out loud (I wish there was a way to describe that that didn't instantly make me see LOL in giant letters!), she just has a brilliant writing style. Anyway, go and check out her blog, and if you're anything like me you'll love it :) (http://roaringtwentiesblog.blogspot.co.uk)

Website of the Week
Twitter

Loving twitter again - I found out about the Harvey Nichols Beauty Parlour through twitter last week and attended the event tonight! It was great fun and I got to catch up with the lovely Roisin from Lost my Heart in Wonderland and meet Laura from The Likely Lady for the first time, which was great (more on this event in another post)! I also thoroughly enjoyed the #lbloggers chat on Sunday evening, it was nice to join in again after my travels!

Style Icon of the Week
Emmy Rossum

I'm just going to ignore the fact that Emmy Rossum's Donna Karan Atelier gown doesn't exactly fit with the punk theme of the 2013 Met Gala, because it is beautiful and I want it. I love the colour, I love the shape, I love the beaded detailing and I love that she didn't overdo it with the train. It's perfect. And her heavy smokey eye, nude lip, perfect brows and braided up-do compliment it perfectly. Love. It.

Hope you enjoyed that guys, what have you been loving in the film, fashion, music and blogging world this week?

Thanks for reading!

What's in My Australia Makeup Bag!

Wednesday, 27 February 2013

With just over a week to go now till I leave for sunnier climes, I'm at the stage of deciding for definite what's going with me and what isn't! So, after giving it some serious thought, I've made a pretty final decision, and thought I'd show you the selection of products I'm packing!

You'd think you can't buy makeup in Australia...

Base

Illamasqua Matt Primer, Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation (Ivory), Barry M Cream Foundation (White), Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer (Fair), Garnier Roll-On Concealer (Light), Rimmel Stay Matte Transluscent Powder.

White foundation is a must for me to pale down my main foundation, and I find that a tiny bit of this really affordable Barry M one does the trick. Matt primer to keen my chin and nose shine free in the warmer weather, my cooling Garnier roller ball concealer (very handy for after long flights!) and a good old transluscent powder should serve me well.

Cheeks

So sorry for the glare in this photo, it's ridiculously sunny today (for a change!)

ELF Studio Blusher in Pink Passion, Sleek Contour Kit in Light, ELF Studio Blusher in Peachy Keen, Physicians Formula Organic Wear Natural Bronzer, Topshop Powder Blush in Pop, Benefit Samples - High Beam and Sun Beam

Three blushers - is that overkill? Pop is one of my favourites, but I love the super natural look of Peachy Keen, and I like having a pink option. Love the highlighter from the Sleek Contour Kit, I use the Physicians Formula bronzer every day and the Benefit samples weigh next to nothing, so why not?! :P

Eyes

Sleek Storm Palette, Sleek Molten Metal Duo, Maybelline Colour Tattoo Cream Eyeshadow in On and On Bronze, Maybelline The Falsies Mascara, L'Oréal Superliner in Black, Rimmel Professional Brow Pencil in Hazel, Rimmel Scanadaleyes Kohl Kajal Liner in Nude, Rimmel Exaggerate Waterproof Liner in Black.

My hardest category was eye makeup. I decided the Sleek Storm palette had a perfect selection of matte and shimmery colours for any occasion, and having my Colour Tattoo in On and On Bronze for a base or super quick eye makeup look is handy. My trusty Superliner is a definite, a nude and black pencil for the waterline (trust me, I had to elimiate a brown, a turquoise and a green from the selection!!) and my Falsies mascara - it took me a while to figure out how I felt about this mascara, but now I love it! A brow pencil and my little Sleek Molten Metail duo - y'know, just for special occasions! ;)

Lips

BMbeauty Lipgloss in Corsage, Revlon Lipbutter in Peach Parfait, L'Oréal Rouge Caresse Lipstick in Dating Coral, Nivea Essentials Lipbalm

Easy peasy, I'm pretty simple when it comes to my lip colour. A lipbalm to keep them moisturised, a subtle gloss - Corsage looks super bright but goes on pretty much nude with a little hint of pinky coral, and it's the least sticky lipgloss I've ever used! - and my two favourite lipsticks, both peachy/coral, my favourite colours for my skin tone :)

Obviously I'll have brushes too, but they're waiting to be washed so didn't bother photographing them!

So, what do you think? Am I overdoing it? Let me know what your favourite makeup products are, in general and for going on holiday, or living abroad for a few months like me! :) Thanks so much for reading guys, can't believe the countdown really is now on!!!
