Returning to Stars Hollow: "Gilmore Girls - A Year in the Life"

Sunday, 27 November 2016

It's not often that after almost a decade of being off the air, one of your all time favourite television shows comes back for a four part mini-series. Looking back at some of my old blogposts then, I'm sure you could imagine my excitement when Netflix announced that it was official - a Gilmore Girls revival was in the works, and set to hit our screens in 2016. Anticipation has been building online for the past few months, with trailers and teaser clips and cast interviews flooding my timeline on a daily basis, and I've been loving it. It seems that lately, more people than ever have welcomed this show into their homes, and despite having finished the original run way back in 2007, the show is proving now to be more popular than ever. As a fan from way back when, this is something I am immensely pleased to see!

Today is Sunday 27th November, and I have pretty much spent my whole weekend in Stars Hollow. I avoided social media as much as possible at work on Friday, hid my phone while I was out for dinner with friends, and then came home to watch the first episode. Saturday was spent watching the other three, and today was spent thinking about, reading about and talking about my thoughts on Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Having been putting up with an ongoing cold for three weeks now, it was perfectly timed - my ultimate comfort tv returning exactly when I needed it. For weeks and months I have been excited about this, counting down the days this past week until it arrived, but never once stopping to think "am I emotionally prepared for this?". Turns out, I was not.

Some shows come in to your life for a short time. They serve a purpose, whether that is easy entertainment after a long day at work, or thrilling, suspenseful "water cooler" conversation fodder, jumping on the bandwagon of whatever series everyone and their aunt seems to be raving about at the time. But some shows are different - they get under your skin and work their way into your life in a way that means that you'll always come back to them. They bring comfort at stressful times, laughter during boredom, and the characters you meet become more than simply works of fiction, or vehicles for a writer to discuss a particular issue. You feel like you really know them, like you understand them, and like they will always be there waiting for you when you need them. Gilmore Girls is one of those shows. And no matter how much time passes, or how long I leave it between revisiting old episodes, the moment those characters appear on my screen it's like they never left. This deep rooted connection that I, and so many other fans of the show, have had to Stars Hollow and it's inhabitants for years now, is what made me so excited about this revival, and the involvement of creators Amy and Dan, and so many members of the cast, made me confident that this was something that was going to work. Revisiting old shows years after they end can be dangerous - sometimes that old spark is just gone, and it doesn't feel the same. This trip back to Stars Hollow, however, was (at least to me), pretty perfect. I cried a lot of tears, some from nostalgia, some from the plot, laughed out loud, and once again got lost in the cosy bubble that is Lorelai and Rory's world.

Were there a few small issues? Sure. But no original TV series never mind a revival is ever going to be perfect. Those (in)famous last four words, which, from what we understand is exactly how Amy always intended to end the show, have left us in a bit of a spin, and with a lot of questions (and a desperate desire for more episodes). There were also a couple of moments when I questioned Lorelai's reaction (or lack thereof) to some of Rory's choices. But overall, it all worked brilliantly. They all slipped so effortlessly back into those iconic roles - Lauren and Alexis were Lorelai and Rory again from the first scene. Liza Weil as a thirty something year old Paris was perfect, Kelly Bishop's portrayal of a grieving Emily was so moving; every one of them picked up where they left off as if it was ten days never mind ten years since they last played these characters. We had a couple of town meetings, another short film from Kirk, scenes with Rory and every one of her exes (more on that later), and a return to Chilton. The loss of Ed Herrmann was felt throughout, with Richard remaining a strong presence in every episode. Melissa McCarthy could only make one scene but Lorelai and Sookie's reunion was heartwarming, Michel's dry one liners were as funny as ever, and we witnessed new squabbles between Luke and Taylor over trivial town matters. Lorelai and Luke finally tied the knot in one of the most visually beautiful scenes Gilmore Girls has ever given us. We even saw Lane's dad, if only for a second! It was a total nostaglia-fest, with every episode giving fans more to reminisce about, while exploring these characters at a different stage in all of their lives.

I've been reading a lot of reviews of the series today, and most have approached this either in an all in one type of manner, discussing all four episodes in one post, or in an episode by episode style over four posts. Because so much happened, however, I think I'm going to go with a blog post per character approach, with a post for Lorelai, a post for Rory, one for Emily, and then a fourth exploring some of my other favourites (Paris, Lane, Luke, Kirk and Michel - maybe more!). I feel like that will let me summarise my feelings on the arc for each character in a more focused way.

So keep your eyes peeled this week for those reviews. It has been so long since I have properly blogged, so I'll sign off here in the cheesiest way I can possibly think of, by quoting the first episode to reflect how I felt writing this post...

Top 5 Songs From Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 1!

Wednesday, 7 September 2016

If you follow me on twitter, you will perhaps have noticed that over the past couple of weeks, I developed somewhat of an obsession with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. While it took me longer than it should have to start it (so many shows, so little time), once I got past the first few episodes it was a classic binge-watching affair, not stopping to watch anything else with the exception of the PLL midseason finale (thoughts on that here), until season one was done.

If the show has managed to escape your attention until now, a brief overview - Rebecca Bunch is a kick ass lawyer in her late twenties, working a high pay/high pressure job in New York City and killing it. In the process, however, she is also killing her soul. A chance encounter with her summer camp boyfriend of over a decade ago, leads to an impulsive move from the Big Apple to the small town of West Covina, California, where, as the ever so catchy title song explains, she lands a new job, meets an interesting group of new friends, and begins an ill-advised quest to win back Josh Chan.

The show is incredibly clever, exploring serious issues such as depression and anxiety, in amongst the many laughs. The acting is fantastic - Rebecca, played by the incredible Rachel Bloom (who is also co-creator of the show), is a vibrant, flawed and complex character, and the group of friends she surrounds herself with are portrayed beautifully by a stellar ensemble cast. If you haven't watched the show yet, I'd suggest stopping reading here, popping on over to Netflix if you have it and getting started with episode one! If, however, you've had the joy of experiencing the entire season already, click that more button and I'll share with you my top 5 songs from season one!

Tuesday, 28 July 2015

Hello all!

My my... it has been a while, hasn't it?

While I haven't posted on here for a few weeks (sorry about that!), my YouTube channel has been seeing very regular uploads - I've been trying to do three videos a week lately, and absolutely loving it. So I'll direct you to my channel to make up for the little blank space here through June/July on my blog!

ANYWAY. I'm back, and delighted to be here. I hope you are all well and enjoying whatever sort of summer you're having. Here in Glasgow we aren't having what you might call summery weather - grey skies, lots of rain, cold enough to have the heating on in the house. Dreich, to say the least. We were spoilt by the high temperatures and sunshine we had during the Commonwealth Games last July, so this miserable weather is even a shock to our Scottish systems.

The point of this post, however, was to let you all know that after spending a great deal of time thinking about it, I've decided to host a TV related twitter chat next week! I mentioned this earlier in the year, and then put off doing it because I was nervous, thinking no-one would join in. I've hosted twitter chats before (#lbloggers and #careerblogchat) and had so much fun, so this was something I really wanted to do, but let the thought of it not going well put me off. Which, let's be honest, is totally daft.

So, the chat will be happening next Thursday, 6th August 2015, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm, and the questions (at the moment!) will be as follows:

1. What TV shows are you loving right now?

2. How do you usually watch your favourite shows? Netflix, Amazon, Now TV, dvd, etc? And do you watch more on TV/iPad/Laptop?

3. Are you more of a binge-watcher or a week by week viewer? If you binge, what show has been your fastest binge watch?!

4. Name three of your all time favourite television shows - let's see who shares some favourites!

5. BFFs and soul mates - which TV character would you have as a best friend, and who would you date (given the chance!)?

6. Recommend a show to someone based on one of their earlier tweets :)

I thought I'd keep the questions fairly general on this occasion! Then, if it goes well and I decide to make it a more regular thing (probably monthly rather than weekly!), the questions can maybe get a little more specific then, with more of a theme or topic!

One tiny thing I would suggest is to avoid any huge spoilers! Try to avoid tweeting the way a show ends, or about the death of a major character, etc. - the internet is, understandably, full of spoilers, so it's often impossible to avoid these things, but on the off-chance someone is currently on season five of a six season show (having avoided how it ends), let's avoid ruining it! Just because it's nice to be nice. And because I remember how it felt to find out how Season 4 of Dexter ended via Twitter before I saw it!

Anyway, if you're a TV fan, which I know a lot of you guys are, I hope you stop by Twitter next week to talk all things TV! You can follow me there at @lynseymac1.

Hope you're having a fantastic week and thanks for reading :)

5 Reasons To Watch The Office

Friday, 15 May 2015

Hello all :)

Today I decided to write a "5 Reasons to Watch" post for a show I took far too long to get in to. This time last year, I had only recently started watching the US version of The Office, despite being told by so many friends that I just had to give it a shot. When I did, I realised what a mistake it had been to put off watching it for as long as I had! I finally watched the finale a couple of weeks ago and cried my eyes out, both because it was utterly perfect, and because I was so sad it was over!!

So here are 5 reasons to watch The Office - if you've never seen the show before, I hope this inspires you to watch it, and if you're already a fan, I hope you enjoy reliving some of the best (spoiler free, obviously!) aspects of this nine season comedic masterpiece!

The Acting

First and foremost, the acting in this show is incredible. Honestly, the entire cast just make the show a joy to watch, and as the seasons go on it just gets better and better. For me, Steve Carell as Michael Scott is one of the most perfect casting choices ever made - in the original British version of the show, David Brent was not a particularly likeable character, while you can't help but love Michael. Carell strikes the perfect balance, and while Michael still says plenty of stupid things, he has a vulnerability that just leaves you absolutely rooting for him. But it's not just about Michael - the acting from everyone is amazing, and they created some of my favourite characters of all time.

The Writing

The writing on the show is also incredible. Not only is it really sharp and funny, but because we have nine seasons to spend with these characters, we get to know them so well. They are all so well developed that there are genuine moments towards the end of the later seasons (keeping it spoiler free, I promise!) when you find yourself saying "But X situation would never happen because I know that character so well". The relationships they build up feel so genuine, and while not an episode goes by without a lot of laughs, there are plenty absolutely heart-breaking moments thrown in there too. We experience so much with these people, and that's all thanks to the clever writing.

The Short Episodes

It sounds like a daft reason, but since the majority of the episodes are only 20 minutes long, it's so easy to watch. If you have 20 minutes to spare, it's the perfect thing to stick on. It does, however, lend itself extremely well to binge watching for the same reason. You may find yourself having watched six and going, "but one more is just another twenty minutes..."!

The Romance

The search for love is a big deal in this show, for a lot of the characters, and they write their romances so cleverly. Some of my favourite TV pairings exist in this little world, and some of my favourite moments in the show are tied to characters trying to meet the right person. SO CUTE.

Threat Level Midnight

Again, I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but Threat Level Midnight is one of my favourite episodes of television ever. And I have a lot of favourites episodes. It doesn't arrive until season 7, but seriously, it's worth the wait. I've lost track of the number of times I've watched it now, and I genuinely laugh till I cry every single time. It's just one of those perfectly put together, absolutely hilarious moments in television that I'll never get tired of.

So if you haven't watched The Office yet, please give it a shot - you will not regret it! My parents have just started watching it from the beginning for the first time, and I'm so jealous of all the brilliant storylines they have to look forward to!

Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Hello lovelies!

I just wanted to give you a wee head's up about the giveaway I'm hosting over on my YouTube channel at the moment! I uploaded the video yesterday, but wanted to make sure I shared it with the readers of my blog too.

As a film and television addict, I discovered the Smart Pop books back when I was at uni. These are books of fun, chatty essays on a wide range of films, TV shows, comics and books, and I absolutely love them! I bought the books on Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls years ago, and since then have added books on Lost, 24, The Vampire Diaries and Harry Potter to my collection. Covering everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Hunger Games, to Star Wars and The Simpsons, and everything in between, these books are amazing.

So I got in touch with the folks at Smart Pop to tell them how much I loved their books, and I now have the opportunity to give some away!! I'm giving away a grand prize pack, including six of my favourite titles, and two extra prizes where the winners will receive a Smart Pop title of their choice! I'm so excited about this, and I'm so grateful to Smart Pop for giving me the opportunity to do this!

5 Reasons To Watch Gilmore Girls!

Monday, 27 April 2015

Hello you lovely lot, and welcome back to another in my "5 Reasons To Watch" series! Today I'm talking about one of my all time favourite television shows, Gilmore Girls!

I have to admit, it was hard to choose just five reasons for watching this amazing show, but I narrowed it down in the end! This is one of my absolute "go-to"s, if I'm feeling a bit rubbish - it never fails to cheer me up! So, without further ado, here are the five reasons I think you should give this fabulous show a shot!

It's the ultimate comfort food television

My favourite way to describe Gilmore Girls is as comfort food TV - you know when you have one of those days where all you want to do is curl up with a big mug of hot chocolate or tea, and eat something really comforting (don't know about you, but cake usually works for me!)? Gilmore Girls is the televisual equivalent of that tea and cake. It's warm and comforting and funny and familiar, and all you want to do is teleport yourself into the TV and hang out with Lorelai and Rory all day!

The strong, independent women

You know me, I love a well written female character, and this show is packed full of them. From the three generations of Gilmore women, Emily, Lorelai and Rory, to characters like Sookie St James (Lorelai's best friend, played by the wonderful Melissa McCarthy), Paris Geller, Lane Kim, and Miss Patty, the show is filled with strong, feisty, intelligent and funny women. These are women who aren't afraid to be themselves, but who are real and flawed, who make mistakes and are far from perfect. The fact that we see both the vulnerable and the powerful sides to their personalities makes us fall even more in love with them.

I love all of these characters, but I feel like Lorelai needs an individual mention. I adore her. Lauren Graham is one of my favourite humans, and I just love her character to pieces. She is independent, an amazing parent and someone I would seriously like to have as a friend in real life. Sure, she drinks too much coffee, can be a little too proud sometimes, and doesn't always have the best luck when it comes to relationships, but do you know what? That just makes her all the more relatable!

The Dialogue

Even if you've never watched Gilmore Girls before, I'm sure you'll have read at some point or another that one of the defining features of the show is the dialogue. It's fast paced, filled with pop culture references, from films to books to telvision shows and music, and can, for a beginner, be a lot to keep up with. But persevere, even if your first instinct is "these women talk far too quickly, I won't be able keep up" - you will! Give it a couple of episodes and you be a pro in Gilmore-isms! The more you watch, the more you love the writing style - it's so full of wit and charm, and it forever makes you want to read more books, watch more shows, and get lost in their world!

Stars Hollow is the best town

One of my favourite things about the show is the town in which it's set. Stars Hollow, the fictional Connecticut town is a character in and of itself, and is one of those towns where everyone knows everyone (which, as it turns out, can be a blessing and a curse). The quirky characters, the town meetings, the cute houses and town festivals and events will capture your heart, and you'll find yourself wondering if it's possible to move there.

The Story

Finally, this one sounds a little on the vague side, but the story of Gilmore Girls is one that I think everyone could afford to hear. Yeah, it's a mother-daughter tale at heart, but really, the show is about two women, one in her teens to early twenties, and the other in her thirties, and the people closest to them, going through the motions of real life. We experience love and heartbreak with them, we go through education with them, for Rory we experience high school and college, while with Lorelai we experience working for someone else, and eventually working for herself. We go through family dramas, friendship highs and lows, times when they aren't sure where their lives are going, and times when they couldn't be more confident. This isn't high stakes drama like House of Cards or 24, it's just ordinary, every day life (with a healthy dose of wit). And that can be even more fascinating to watch unfold than the craziest, action packed drama.

So if you've never watched Gilmore Girls before, I hope this post has inspired you to give it a shot - I promise, you will not regret it! You have seven whole wonderful seasons to devour, so go forth, release your inner Gilmore and enjoy :)

Have a great day, and thanks for reading!

I've Been Watching...

Sunday, 23 March 2014

My lovely friend Gillian did another Watching Lately post earlier in the week and once again it made me decide to do one of my own! Despite being super busy at uni I seem to have clocked up a good few hours worth of film and television time over the past couple of weeks, so I hope you enjoy this little round up/mini review post :) I've tried to avoid spoilers, but there are spoilers for Catfish, so if you haven't seen it and intend to watch it at any time, look away when you get to that section!

Veronica Mars

I can't put into words how excited I was about this film. If you follow me on twitter, however, you were probably driven mad by my constant tweeting in the lead up to the release - I could not contain myself. If you know me, you'll know that Veronica Mars is one of my all-time favourite television shows, Kristen Bell is one of my all-time favourite human beings and Logan and Veronica are one of my all-time favourite TV pairings... so it was safe to say this film had a lot to live up to. For me, it completely delivered. As a fan of the show, it was such a joy to revisit all those characters, seeing that phenomenal cast together again was amazing. Max Greenfield's scene was actually one of my favourites despite Leo not really being someone I was too bothered about catching up with before the film started. The script was fantastic, as always, so well done Rob Thomas - the famous Veronica Mars dialogue was absolutely on point. I'm not one to obsess over having everything tied up in a neat little package at the end of a show or film, but the ending of Veronica Mars was always one that bothered me - it was cancelled far too soon, so this film was a great opportunity to bring everyone back together and do things properly.

Frozen

I know, I know, I'm a couple of months behind but I've FINALLY seen Frozen! And, as expected, I absolutely loved it. I love that the main theme of this particular Disney offering was the bond between sisters, and families (with an obligatory bit of romance thrown in for good measure, of course!). I won't fangirl for too long since I just talked about Veronica Mars, but before I saw the film I didn't realise that Anna (voiced by Kristen Bell) was pretty much the main character - from the posters and trailers I assumed Elsa (voiced by ''the wickedly talented Adele Dazeem'' a.k.a the lovely Idina Menzel) was the main focus of the film, but in actual fact she didn't get a whole lot of screen time. I thought Anna was a brilliant character though, not your typical Disney heroine but someone I think real girls might actually be able to relate to.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Finally, four years after it was released, I managed to watch Scott Pilgrim! Emma sat me down last night with a cup of tea, a variety of snacks and we managed successfully not to talk over the whole thing. I really, really enjoyed it. I'm a big Michael Cera fan anyway, but the whole game/graphic novel element of it isn't something I'd normally be particularly drawn to. However, I was instantly won over - visually I thought it was fantastic, the game style of it actually worked really, really well, and despite knowing very little about the storyline beforehand, it quickly grabbed my attention. Highlight - Mae Whitman. Always Mae Whitman. She's just brilliant. And for any Arrested Development fans, seeing those two on screen together again in very different roles was a lot of fun.

Arrested Development

SPEAKING OF, I've been rewatching a bit of Arrested Development so I can actually finish watching Season 4! I started it at the time it was released but was too busy to watch it all in one go (or at least an episode a day), so I fell behind and lost track of what was happening. For someone who is, and always was, as much of a fan of the show as I am, that is a shameful thing to admit. However, the plan is to actually finish it ASAP, so I've been watching a handful of old favourite episodes to put me in the mood to watch it.

Catfish

I've been referencing Catfish for years because despite never having watched the actual documentary before, I had known for a long time what it was about and how it turned out. Last weekend, however, I sat down to actually watch it and I really, really enjoyed it. It made me feel much sadder than I expected it to though - the whole thing towards the end was so very uncomfortable. It's unbelievable (and scary) what some people can do with the internet these days, creating an entire life for themselves that doesn't exist.

Sidenote - if you've seen Catfish, how RIDICULOUSLY hot is Nev? I almost couldn't concentrate on the documentary, I was too busy falling in love with him. I mentioned to Emma that I had watched it, and weirdly she had watched it a couple of days before. Apparently the minute she saw him she knew how I'd feel about him ;)

The Hunger Games - Catching Fire

I won't spend too much time discussing Catching Fire because I've mentioned it on here a million times before, but my DVD arrived on Monday and I was pleased as punch. I had had a long day at uni and I got home, had dinner and literally went to bed to watch my dvd. It was just as good as it was first time around. What I wouldn't give to have a Peeta in my life, I tell you.

What have you been watching lately?!

Thanks for reading! :)

Valentine's Day - Top 5 TV Romances

Thursday, 13 February 2014

Once again Valentine's Day is fast approaching and I've sat for the past hour trying to think of a suitable post. I contemplated writing a ''what to do on Valentine's Day when you're single'' sort of thing, but there are lots of them out there already, and they all say much the same thing - either ''hang out with your single girl friends'' (which is my plan!), ''watch a romantic film'' (really?!), or, one which I've found a little puzzling ''Go on a mate date with one of your guy friends'' (maybe it's just me but wouldn't that just be a combination of confusing and depressing when you're surrounded by actual couples? Let me know if you've done this before and it worked and maybe, if I'm on my lonesome this time next year, I'll drag one of my guy pals out for dinner!).

Last year I did the Celebrity Crush Tag as a video/post for Valentine's Day week and it seemed to go down pretty well! So, this year, I thought I would do another list type post (love me a ''top 5'' so I do), and fill you in on some of my favourite TV romances of all time. I have similar posts for my top 5 TV friendships and Top 5 Romcoms, if you're interested :)

BEWARE OF THE SPOILERS! (contains spoilers for Lost, Veronica Mars, 24, Gilmore Girls and Friends)

Desmond and Penny (Lost)

source

Desmond and Penny may well be my favourite couple ever. For any Lost fans, you'll know the trials and tribulations these two go through to find their way back to each other and they are just lovely. While I couldn't help but get invested in the Jack-Kate-Sawyer-Juliet quadrangle, Desmond and Penny were far simpler and I was rooting for them the whole way through. The scene I've linked above (click on their names to go to the YouTube link) when they finally manage to contact each other is one of my all time favourites!

Logan and Veronica (Veronica Mars)

source

Kristen Bell and Jason Dohring have an INSANE amount of chemistry, so it was little wonder the writers decided to make the most of it and change the direction Logan's character took. I am a huge Veronica and Logan fan, and was from the moment I started watching the show. I know, I know, Piz was lovely and it was all a lot simpler, but I so, so badly wanted them to end up together. That spark and banter between them was just consistently amazing... I really can't wait for the film.

Tony and Michelle (24)

source

Aww I loved Tony and Michelle so much, I really did. I think one of the interesting things about 24 (one of the many, many interesting things!) is how the show handles this sort of situation - if a series starts with two people dating that's fine, but a blossoming relationship is more difficult to deal with since the entire season takes place over the course of one day! But I thought they handled this relationship in season 2 brilliantly. The chemistry between the actors was amazing, and in the following seasons I loved how the dynamic in their relationship constantly shifted.

Lorelai and Luke (Gilmore Girls)

source

For any Gilmore fans, the Lorelai-Luke relationship was always on the cards, and I really loved them together. To be fair, I also really loved Lorelai's relationship with Max (I think I actually wanted to marry Max, I was gutted when they split up to begin with!) but the bond between her and Luke was too obvious to ignore. There are so many scenes between these two that I love, but the one linked above (the infamous first kiss) is always a favourite. I had to include this one too though, because no matter how many times I watch it, it never fails to make me laugh!

Monica and Chandler (Friends)

source

Ross and Rachel always seem to be the first couple people talk about when it comes to Friends, but I was much more of a Monica and Chandler fan. All of their big moments, from when they get together, to the proposal, the wedding, the struggle to get pregnant and then becoming parents are some of my favourite episodes of Friends, and that is saying something! Chandler was definitely my favourite character, and I just loved seeing how their relationship developed over the years - the beauty of a long running tv show!

So that's it for my top 5 favourite TV couples, just in time for Valentine's Day! My Top 5 TV Friendships

Tuesday, 6 August 2013

A couple of weeks ago I put together my top 5 21st century rom coms and I enjoyed it so much I decided to make another list! This time, it's my top 5 favourite TV friendships! I realise that friendships from two of my very favourite shows of all time (Lost and 24) are missing - there clearly weren't any BFFs in there that I really fell for! Anyway, hope you enjoy this little list and let me know what some of your favourite friendships in TV are!

Veronica and Wallace/VeronicaMars

source

I think Veronica and Wallace may be my ULTIMATE favourite TV friendship because I really think it's the only completely platonic boy/girl friendship I've ever seen in a ''teen'' style tv show. Instantly bonding when she saves him from humiliation at the hands of a motorcycle gang on his first day at Neptune High, Veronica and Wallace form a bond that can't be broken, and support each other through the highs and lows of life from then on. They have a no questions asked kind of friendship - Wallace might not be entirely comfortable with some of the favours he ends up doing her, but the moment Veronica asks for his help he's there.

Jess, Nick, Winston and Schmidt/NewGirl

source

I love the little family Jess, Nick, Winston and Schmidt have together in the apartment. They each have their little roles, and although they drive each other completely insane, when one is gone (see the season 1 finale!) it completely upsets the balance. And yes, okay, Jess and Nick have some of the most amazing on screen chemistry ever, but aside from that attraction, they are really good friends. They all give each other some terrible advice sometimes but they're guaranteed to be there to take care of each other, no matter what the situation is.

Lorelai and Rory/GilmoreGirls

source

A television mother daughter friendship that will never be replaced for me, we have Rory and Lorelai Gilmore. I have a friend who completely disagreed with me on this, saying a parent and child should be that first and foremost, friends second, but I love the relationship between these two. I love that Lorelai is so completely focused on her daughter, above anything else, which is so rare to see in tv these days - particularly in teen tv shows the parents are usually the source of trauma in the teens lives (the topic of my university dissertation no less!). The moments when they fight are so unbearable because the bond is so strong, and we love to see their in jokes and pop culture references and imagine that we too live in Stars Hollow... or maybe that's just me!

Joey and Chandler/Friends

source

Could we really have a top five without a Friends friendship thrown in there?! Probably not! I love Chandler and Joey's friendship, some of my all time favourite lines in the show are between the two of them. From their man hugs to the ridiculous fall out over Kathy that leads to Chandler spending Thanksgiving in a box, there is never a dull moment with them.

Dan and Blair/GossipGirl

source

Now this may be a controversial one (it probably is) but I was a huge Dan and Blair fan. I loved the chemistry between them in seasons four and five, and the way their friendship really blossomed over time. There's a proper spark between them, which is what ended up causing the demise of the entire Gossip Girl storyline because the writers split their fanbase straight down the middle with the ''Dair'' vs ''Chair'' saga, but putting romance aside, I loved the relationship they had. Their friendship comes from not only a vey intellectual place, which makes for a lot of good banter, but as we see as time goes on, he will literally do anything for her. So let's, for a moment, put aside the fact that he is in love with her, and focus on the friendship itself. If you do that, I'm sure you'll see what I mean. It wouldn't be hard to beat ANY of the other ludicrous GG friendships - I think Blair and Serena are probably the worst example of a female friendship I've ever seen, but feel free to disagree!
