I've Been Watching #4

Wednesday, 9 July 2014

Starting as I mean to go on with my 'I'm going to talk about film and tv because I like to talk about film and tv' plan, here's another I've Been Watching! I think it's safe to say that when I'm not writing my dissertation or catching up with my friends to bore them with chat about my dissertation, I'm combatting the monotony of job hunting by watching lots and lots of my favourite things.

Once Upon A Time

I've been binge watching Once Upon a Time this week, and I really am "hooked" (Get it? Being as witty as I am is a curse, I tell you. Obligatory photo above of Captain Hook who I may or may not spend the majority of my viewing time swooning over). I adored season 1 and watched it when it was on Channel 5, but for one reason or another I managed to lose track of it round about episode five of season 2. This has now been rectified as Emma got me the seasons 1 and 2 boxset for my birthday, and I have been devouring it on a daily basis since. It is amazing. For anyone who enjoys fairy tales (take a look at my blog header and you'll see I'm a fan!), this show is an absolute must watch. It's also the creation of two of the brilliant brains behind Lost (Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz), which made me pretty certain I'd be on board from the start. It has a lot of really nice little similarities to Lost, with the dual worlds and the story flashing between one world/timeline and another. It also has a few of the same cast members, with Lana Parilla (minor role in Lost, but major role as the Evil Queen here), Emilie de Ravin, Jorge Garcia and Alan Dale all appearing already. Speaking of the cast, they are amazing. I'm a big Jennifer Morrison fan, and she is amazing as Emma, but every single cast member plays their part to perfection. It also has some fantastic, kick ass female characters which I really love - they've taken the lovely but often passive female characters from the Disney-style takes on fairy tales, and changed them up into really feisty, powerful women. I honestly cannot get enough of this show. Or Colin O'Donoghue/Captain Hook/Killian Jones...

New Girl - Season 3

I've only watched two episodes so far, so haven't got too much to say on it yet, but we all know I love New Girl. Nick and Jess are one of my favourite on-screen pairings, and the chemistry between the cast is electric. HOWEVER. What are they doing to Winston?! Writers, what's going on here?! I can honestly say that in season two, the references to Winston's uselessness when it comes to pranks were some of the funniest moments of the show - there's a scene between him and Schmidt that makes me cry with laughter every time I watch it (the bear in the restaurant plan, New Girl fans?! I'm laughing just thinking about it!). But in the past two episodes he seems to have gone from the sort of sensible one, who would always call Schmidt out on his nonsense, and give Nick a kick when he needs it, to a slapstick idiot, who has lost his grip on reality. I get the feeling the positive reaction they got to those scenes in season two made the writers decide to kick it up a notch, but for me, it just doesn't work, and actually puts me off watching a wee bit *cries*. That being said, I still love the show, and still love Nick and Jess's banter. Must catch up on episodes three and four soon.

24: Live Another Day

I won't say too much on this, since I mentioned it before, but after episode ten I couldn't very well not talk about it. 24: Live Another Day is knocking it completely out of the park - it is fully insane. Honestly, I was on the edge of my seat for the whole episode; it's actually quite exhausting viewing. I don't want to spoil this for anyone, so won't say anything specific, but the level of terror threat in this series is actually mind-blowingly scary. You're watching it, knowing it's a television drama, but it still sends chills down your spine. I think Kiefer Sutherland is playing it beautifully though, as he always does. Poor Jack has had quite a life. I love Jack Bauer, I really do. I simultaneously cannot wait to watch the next episode, and I'm frightened to watch it, because that will mean there's only one left!! I've missed it, and it feels like it's come and gone again too quickly.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

Another reason to celebrate having Netflix, I watched this little gem a couple of weeks ago. I've wanted to see it for ages - I haven't actually read the book, but I read and enjoyed "Dash and Lily's Book of Dares" last year, which is a similar YA sort of story from the same authors. If you've got a couple of hours to spare, and you just want to lose yourself in a cute, sort of predictable, but easy going romantic movie, give this a shot. The entire story happens over the course of one night, and we watch the relationship between Nick and Norah (who have just met) take a few twists and turns along the way. It's not going to win multiple awards for life changing movie of the year any time soon, but it brightened up my evening, and I thought Michael Cera and Kat Dennings worked really well together on screen. One downside - I could not STAND Nick's ex-girlfriend, which I know is entirely the point, but still. She drove me well and truly up the wall!

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

I bought this on DVD for my mum for her birthday or Christmas last year, but neither she and my dad, nor I, had got around to watching it, and I had forgotten we even had it. One of my friends was talking about it recently though, and he urged me to watch it, saying it was amazing. Sitting down to watch it one evening last month, I tweeted that it was my choice of film for the night, and instantly got messages from friends and followers on twitter saying "get your Kleenex ready'', with one of my friends saying she cried so much watching it her boyfriend's mum thought they were breaking up! Suffice to say, I was concerned about how I would react. Did I cry? You bet I did. I cried bucketloads. But it was absolutely worth it. The film follows a young boy named Oskar (Thomas Horn) in the aftermath of his father's death in the 9/11 attacks. He attempts to deal with his grief, and struggles to let go, causing a rift to form between him and his mum (Sandra Bullock), as we follow him on a journey to hold on to the remaining connection he has to his dad (Tom Hanks). I won't say any more than that since that's about as much as you get from the trailer, but it is a beautiful, sad, hopeful story about family, grief and moving on, and I would recommend it in a heartbeat.

Have you seen any of these shows/films? I'd love to know what you thought! Or let me know what you'd recommend I check out next!

Favourites of the Week #15

Sunday, 11 August 2013

Another week, another weekly favourites. Sorry this feature has become sort of intermittent, I'm going to try and get it back on track and do one every Sunday! So, without further ado, here are some of the things I've been loving this week :)

Track of the Week
Fifth Harmony - Miss Movin' On

Never thought I'd hear myself say this, but I've actually really been enjoying Fifth Harmony's debut single. The girl band was formed in the first series of the XFactor USA which I gave up on watching after a handful of episodes, but this first single is quite catchy. It's nothing new - very typical girl band, sort of girl power pop song, but I have found myself dancing around to it this week.

Album of the Week
Imagine Dragons - Night Visions

I'm so addicted to the Imagine Dragons album, it's so good! I've loved Radioactive since it came out, and have wanted to get my hands on the album for weeks. My lovely bestie Emma bought me it as a wee cheer up present this week, which was very nice of her, and it's as good as I hoped it would be!

TV Show of the Week
New Girl

Finished New Girl Season 1 this week and I loved it so much! I won't go on and on about it as I've talked about it plenty times before, but the chemistry between all of the actors is insane, and I just can't get enough of the characters. A stand out episode from season 1 had to be The Landlord - Nick and Jess are always hilarious together but this one had tears literally rolling down my face from laughing so hard.

Film of the Week
Safe Haven

Speaking of tears running down my face, I finished watching Safe Haven for the first time last night and oh my, it had me bawling my eyes out. I know Nicholas Sparks and Nicholas Sparks-esque films aren't for everyone but I love The Notebook, and thoroughly enjoyed Safe Haven too. I'm a big fan of Josh Duhamel, and because I hadn't read the book I had no idea what I was letting myself in for with the story of this film - it's a tear jerker!

Beauty Product of the Week
Bourjois Bronzing Primer

Loving this for actually giving me some colour in my face, I'm so pale and have looked even pastier while I haven't been feeling too well, so this has been a life saver.

Book of the Week
How to Leave Twitter by Grace Dent

This book is hilarious! I'm only about a quarter of the way through it at the moment, but it's so entertaining. The opening pages about how people usually end up setting up a twitter account and how hopeless you inevitably are to begin with are brilliant because it is exactly what I was like when I started out on twitter!

YouTuber of the Week
Louise - Sprinkle of Glitter

She often features as my favourite youtuber, but I really do love her. Have been enjoying her vlogs from Vidcon (why was I not there?!!) and the fact that she made a collab video with Grace Helbig, my other favourite YouTuber, this week meant she couldn't not be my YouTuber of the Week.

Blog of the Week
Iona from Iona Blog

My pal Iona has given her blog a wee revamp this week with the help of the very talented Gillian, who is responsible for my blog design too!! The little bumble bee in her blog header is certainly apt, because she is a busy bee at the moment with two jobs on the go, but she still finds time to update her little corner of the internet with all sorts of posts - in her most recent update, she goes through her perfect 48 Hour Fringe, as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is in full swing! Be sure to go and check her out.

Website of the Week
Forty Days of Dating

Oh my, I have been addicted to this website this week! If you haven't heard of it, it's basically an online diary of two friends, Jessica and Tim, who decided earlier this year to date each other for forty days since neither of them has managed to keep a relationship going (for very different reasons) so far in their lives. Jessie loves 'love', and is constantly searching for something meaningful, getting too attached too fast, while Tim is more of a casual dater, dating several girls at once and breaking it off before it goes too far. So far they've posted up to day thirty one and I can't stop reading!

Style Icon of the Week
Lily Collins

source

I picked up the September issue of Glamour yesterday, mainly because I've been finding myself quite drawn to Lily Collins lately, and I wanted to read her interview. However, I think she looks amazing on the cover. Love the red dress and Audrey Hepburn-esque hair and eyebrows. She's got a sort of pixie look, if that makes sense, and I think this style really, really suits her.

What have some of your favourite things been this week? Let me know in the comments! :)

My Top 5 TV Friendships

Tuesday, 6 August 2013

source

A couple of weeks ago I put together my top 5 21st century rom coms and I enjoyed it so much I decided to make another list! This time, it's my top 5 favourite TV friendships! I realise that friendships from two of my very favourite shows of all time (Lost and 24) are missing - there clearly weren't any BFFs in there that I really fell for! Anyway, hope you enjoy this little list and let me know what some of your favourite friendships in TV are!

Veronica and Wallace/VeronicaMars

source

I think Veronica and Wallace may be my ULTIMATE favourite TV friendship because I really think it's the only completely platonic boy/girl friendship I've ever seen in a ''teen'' style tv show. Instantly bonding when she saves him from humiliation at the hands of a motorcycle gang on his first day at Neptune High, Veronica and Wallace form a bond that can't be broken, and support each other through the highs and lows of life from then on. They have a no questions asked kind of friendship - Wallace might not be entirely comfortable with some of the favours he ends up doing her, but the moment Veronica asks for his help he's there.

Jess, Nick, Winston and Schmidt/NewGirl

source

I love the little family Jess, Nick, Winston and Schmidt have together in the apartment. They each have their little roles, and although they drive each other completely insane, when one is gone (see the season 1 finale!) it completely upsets the balance. And yes, okay, Jess and Nick have some of the most amazing on screen chemistry ever, but aside from that attraction, they are really good friends. They all give each other some terrible advice sometimes but they're guaranteed to be there to take care of each other, no matter what the situation is.

Lorelai and Rory/GilmoreGirls

source

A television mother daughter friendship that will never be replaced for me, we have Rory and Lorelai Gilmore. I have a friend who completely disagreed with me on this, saying a parent and child should be that first and foremost, friends second, but I love the relationship between these two. I love that Lorelai is so completely focused on her daughter, above anything else, which is so rare to see in tv these days - particularly in teen tv shows the parents are usually the source of trauma in the teens lives (the topic of my university dissertation no less!). The moments when they fight are so unbearable because the bond is so strong, and we love to see their in jokes and pop culture references and imagine that we too live in Stars Hollow... or maybe that's just me!

Joey and Chandler/Friends

source

Could we really have a top five without a Friends friendship thrown in there?! Probably not! I love Chandler and Joey's friendship, some of my all time favourite lines in the show are between the two of them. From their man hugs to the ridiculous fall out over Kathy that leads to Chandler spending Thanksgiving in a box, there is never a dull moment with them.

Dan and Blair/GossipGirl

source

Now this may be a controversial one (it probably is) but I was a huge Dan and Blair fan. I loved the chemistry between them in seasons four and five, and the way their friendship really blossomed over time. There's a proper spark between them, which is what ended up causing the demise of the entire Gossip Girl storyline because the writers split their fanbase straight down the middle with the ''Dair'' vs ''Chair'' saga, but putting romance aside, I loved the relationship they had. Their friendship comes from not only a vey intellectual place, which makes for a lot of good banter, but as we see as time goes on, he will literally do anything for her. So let's, for a moment, put aside the fact that he is in love with her, and focus on the friendship itself. If you do that, I'm sure you'll see what I mean. It wouldn't be hard to beat ANY of the other ludicrous GG friendships - I think Blair and Serena are probably the worst example of a female friendship I've ever seen, but feel free to disagree!

Favourites of the Week #13

Sunday, 7 July 2013

I'm back with aother weekly favourites post! Typing this just minutes after Andy Murray won Wimbledon... what a day!!!

Track of the Week
Saturday Night - Natalia Kills

I really do love Natalia Kills, and I feel like she doesn't really get the hype she probably deserves. This song is ridiculously catchy, but if you properly listen to the lyrics it has a really dark undertone. It's delving into a much darker part of her past than any of her other songs have really revealed. Combining these lyrics with such an upbeat, catchy melody is a really interesting mix. Check out some of her older songs like Wonderland, Kill My Boyfriend and Break You Hard too - they're amazing!

Album of the Week
Kodaline - In a Perfect World

This is a phenomenal debut album, and one of those ones you wonder how they will ever follow up with their next album! I will say it maybe loses a tiny bit of momentum towards the end, but there still isn't a single track on it I don't like.

TV Show of the Week
New Girl

I adore New Girl, and finally got the season one box set this week! I have seen lots of random episodes, watched some on the plane home from Australia actually and I have wanted to be able to sit and watch it properly ever since. I had a little NG marathon last night and I'm falling dangerously in love with Jake Johnson who plays Nick... ladies, I challenge you not to!

Beauty Product of the Week
Nivea Lip Butter in Raspberry Rose

I am absolutely loving this lip butter from Nivea, I got it as a little extra birthday present and it's amazing! It tastes so good, I can't even describe it, I have to stop myself trying to eat it!!

Book of the Week
The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey

Still on The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey and still really enjoying it. It's intense, I'll say that! I've said it before, alien stories are not my cup of tea, but this one is pretty interesting!

YouTuber of the Week
Tanya Burr

This week Tanya Burr hit one million subscribers and uploaded a video to celebrate, which inlcuded lots of little clips sent in by her subscribers commenting on how happy her videos make them, and how she makes them feel better when they're feeling down. I can't imagine what an amazing feeling that must be. If I could do YouTube for a living, I absolutely would - it must be so great to be able to do what you love and what you have fun doing with your friends for a living, and to have such incredible support from your viewers. I've been watching Tanya's videos for years now, and her videos really are lovely. So if you haven't already checked them out, go and do so now!

Blog of the Week
Charlotte's Web

I discovered Charlotte's blog just a couple of weeks ago - she was another one of Louise Sprinkle of Glitter's Amazing Advertisers last month, and I instantly fell in love with her blog! It's so pretty, with such lovely photographs and easy to read posts. Definitely go and check this one out guys! :)

Website of the Week
Twitter

More blog love for twitter this week - just took part in the loveliest #lbloggers chat (you know I love a good twitter chat) and the topic was blogging friends/blogs that have inspired you - it was a really lovely, positive conversation and as usual made me appreciate what a great thing blogging is :)

Style Icon of the Week
Mischa Barton

source

Mischa Barton at Berlin Fashion Week - not sure how I feel about the sunglasses, I have to admit, but I love the combination of this sophisticated orange dress with the casually worn studded leather jacket!

What have some of your favourite things been this week? Let me know in the comments! :)
